We sat down with Evaggelos Stampoulis, Operations Manager at Makios Logistics S.A. member of Streem Global Group in Hungary, to explore his journey in the logistics industry and gain insights into the current and future landscape of the industry. With over a decade of experience at one of Greece's largest logistics companies, Mr. Stampoulis shares his thoughts on the dynamic nature of logistics, the industry's pressing challenges and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

What made you decide at a young age to study and work in logistics?

During my Erasmus studies in the Netherlands in Zwolle, we were introduced to the 'beer game', a simulation game that simplifies how goods move from one place to another and the impact of the supply chain on the global economy. My desire to understand the complex processes behind transport and distribution, combined with my love of problem solving and organization, motivated me to choose logistics for my education and career.

What do you find most interesting about the industry?

The most interesting aspect of the logistics industry is its dynamic nature and constant evolution. Every day we face new challenges and have to find innovative solutions to meet the demands of the market. This dynamic environment ensures that no two days are the same and keeps the work interesting and stimulating. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is the opportunity to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of processes. Improving efficiency means optimizing routes, reducing costs and ensuring that resources are used in the best possible way. Effectiveness focuses on achieving desired outcomes, such as delivering products on time and in perfect condition.

What are the key challenges facing the industry today?

Some of the biggest challenges facing the logistics industry today are:

The need for sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.

The increasing complexity of supply chains due to globalization. Globalization means that companies source raw materials, manufacture products and distribute goods across multiple countries and continents. Managing a supply chain that spans different geographical locations means dealing with different time zones, languages and cultural practices. This geographic dispersion increases the difficulty of coordinating and ensuring smooth operations across all segments of the supply chain.

The need for digital transformation and the adoption of new technologies, such as AI and IoT.

Attracting and retaining skilled talent in a competitive labour market.

How do you see the logistics industry evolving over the next 5-10 years, especially in the European market?

Over the next 5-10 years, the logistics industry in Europe will undergo significant changes. We expect to see further integration of digital technologies, improvements in automation systems and increased use of data to optimize processes. The focus on sustainability and the transition to green transport solutions will also be crucial. In addition, increased cooperation between European countries will lead to more coordinated and efficient supply chains. There are already toll payment companies that support payment across multiple European countries with one device. By harmonizing regulations, improving infrastructure and integrating digital systems, European countries can create more coordinated and efficient supply chains. These collaborative efforts will not only improve the competitiveness of European logistics, but also ensure that the industry is well prepared for future challenges and opportunities. 

You have a 10-year track record at Makios Logistics, one of the largest logistics companies in Greece, which is now entering a new era with its merger with Streem Global. What are the benefits and challenges of this new era for the company?

The merger of Makios Logistics and Streem Global brings significant benefits, such as expanding our network, creating synergies, increasing expertise and accessing new markets. However, the challenges include integrating different corporate cultures, adapting to new systems and processes, and ensuring that employees and customers are comfortable with the changes.

What are the reasons for the expansion of Streem Global's activities in Hungary, where you are the manager? What are the opportunities?

Streem Global's expansion into Hungary is driven by the strategic objective of geographic diversification and capitalizing on the opportunities offered by Central Europe as a logistics hub. With its strategic location and well-developed infrastructure network, Hungary offers significant opportunities to improve our supply chain and customer service in the wider region. Hungary is well connected to major European trade routes, including the trans-European road and rail networks. This connectivity ensures reliable and efficient transport options for both inbound and outbound logistics operations. In addition, countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania are experiencing economic growth and increased demand for logistics services. Hungary's central location provides easier access to these markets, facilitating business expansion and new opportunities.

What is day-to-day life like in Budapest? What was the experience of moving from Thessaloniki?

Life in Budapest is very enjoyable. It is a beautiful city with a rich history and many cultural events. The city is famous for its thermal baths, such as the Széchenyi and Gellért baths, and iconic landmarks such as the Buda Castle, the Parliament building and the Chain Bridge. The Danube, especially at night with the city lights, is magical. I would definitely recommend everyone to visit the city at least once in their life. Due to my experience of living abroad, moving from Thessaloniki has been smooth, although it has had its challenges, such as adapting to a new language and culture.

What advice would you give to young professionals who are considering a career in the logistics industry?

My advice to young professionals is to be open to new technologies and changes in the industry. It is important to continually develop your skills and keep abreast of the latest trends and developments. Networking and building relationships within the industry can also open many doors. Finally, be prepared for a career that is both challenging and rewarding. Working in logistics often involves dealing with international markets, offering global exposure and the chance to work with different teams and cultures. This global perspective enhances your understanding of different markets and business practices, opening up further career opportunities. Finally, the logistics industry is essential to the functioning of the global economy, ensuring a steady demand for skilled professionals. This demand provides job security and many opportunities for career progression as companies continually seek to improve their logistics operations and supply chain efficiency.
